Students will create recycled paper from newspaper.
Students will investigate ways recycled paper can be used.
Students will create a vodcast to demonstrate how to make homemade recycled paper.

Supplies for Experiment:

Newspaper
2 Bowls of Warm - to hot water
Mixer - hand held or electric
A piece of stiff, fine meshed screen (can use piece of a strainer flattened out)
Tin snips
Tweezers
Optional: leaf, crayon shavings, pens
Digital voice recorder
Digital Camera

Step 1: Learn

Students will watch the Science House video on how to recycle paper
Part I: http://www.sciencehousefoundation.org/videoscience-video-recycledpaper.html (2.5 minutes)
Part II: http://www.sciencehousefoundation.org/videoscience-video-recycledPaper2.html (6 minutes)

Step 2: Experiment

Students will recreate the experiment and take photos of steps and audio record the steps along the way.
  • Tear strips off newspaper
  • Add it to hot water
  • mix with mixer until material becomes "gray soup"
  • prepare screen and place over another bowl
  • Pour gray soup mixture through screen
  • Allow material on screen to dry
  • Carefully remove layer of "recycled paper" with tweezers off of screen.
  • May do layer activities of paper that are suggested on video.

Step 3: Write Audio Script

Students will write the audio script using their digital recordings and notes from the experiment.
Script must describe all important aspects of the experiment and describe what is being seen in each photo.

Step 4: Research & Flickr

Students will research how paper is recycled and write a report
Students will learn to use Flikr common area to find pictures for their report
Flickr Common Area

Step 5: Experiment Presentation

Students will...
  1. Upload their photos to Windows Movie Maker.
  2. Organize their photos in the correct order for the timeline of the experiment
  3. Record their audio for their vodcast using the observations they made on their digital recording or notes during their experiment
  4. Upload their audio file to Windows Movie Maker
  5. Edit their vodcast to ensure that the proper audio is with the correct photo
  6. Save their vodcast and drop it to the shared classroom file

***Teacher will embed each video into the classroom blog

Step 6: Experiment Reflection/Closing Activities

Students will view each individual groups vodcast. On the classroom blog for your group's video post well thought answers to each of the following questions.
  1. Did the experiment go according to your initial plan? Why or why not?
  2. What could cause the results to be inaccurate?
  3. What conclusion can you draw from this experiment?
  4. After watching your classmates videos, what do you think you could have done differently to achieve a better end result?
